Several cities in Japan including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo will go into a state of emergency from April 25 to mid May. This is the third time that the country has declared a state of emergency owing to Covid 19 spread. The country, which is set to host the Olympic Games in July, is in a rush to contain the spread of the virus.
“We must take strong measures in a focused manner while many people are on holiday during the Golden Week to bring the virus under control," Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Thursday. The Golden Week in the country marks four national holidays within seven days.
The country is set to close all bars and restaurants though schools will remain open.
“The serving of alcoholic drinks at eating and drinking establishments is likely to be suspended under a new Covid 19 state of emergency set to be declared for Tokyo and three western prefectures,” the Japan Times said.
The news organisation added that large commercial facilities including department stores, shopping malls and theme parks could be shut down.
Japan reported a total of 5,465 cases on Thursday.
