The decision was taken in at high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has also decided to cancel Class 10 board exams.

Pressure has been building with leaders of opposition parties, parents and students’ bodies urging the Centre to review plans of holding offline exams.

“I am relieved that this decision has been taken. Cases have been rising and what is more worrisome is that a large number of youngsters are getting infected this time,” a parent whose daughter was appear for Class 10 exams said.

The Class 12 Board Exams were earlier scheduled between May 4 and June 14.

While many have suggested to conduct online exams, a senior teacher said that there are many students, especially in smaller towns, who may not have access to adequate infrastructure for the same.

Meanwhile, the CBSE will develop an objective assessment criterion for the assessment of the results of Class 10 board exams.
